7 possible uses of the internet in the modern world

Believe it or not, the internet has revolutionized the technology industry, and now internet controls almost all of our activities, and has converted our world into a smaller place “global village“. The internet has changed our Shopping styles , how we interact with artificially intelligent machines, our data storage options , navigation , Health industry, and many more.

 

 

But what is internet?

We would like to define the internet as a “vehicle” that connects several networks to form one very big network, where resources are shared using standardized communication protocols and businesses carried out. This “vehicle” is driven by curiosity and innovation, though it has several demerits such as, its ability to open doors to unsuspecting individuals to cyber bullying, data theft, among other crimes on the internet.

According to business dictionary, it is a means of connecting a computer to any other computer anywhere in the world via dedicated routers and servers. When two computers are connected over the Internet, they can send and receive all kinds of information such as text, graphics, voice, video, and computer programs.

 

Who owns the internet?

This question has always been asked in many Question and Answer (QnA) forums, but the simplest and more accurate answer we would like to believe that its “No one”. No one owns the internet though, there are many organizations, corporations, governments, private citizens and service providers that all own pieces of the infrastructure that makes up this huge network.

Imagine you have been invited to a party by your friends or you have been invited to a special business meeting to some location which you have no idea of how to get to. You pull out your phone, open google maps and navigate your way to your desired location. Most navigation services rely on the internet, and they help us to find places quickly, so we have internet to thank, for not getting lost.

 

  • Entertainment – In this modern world, entertainment channels have shifted their focus to the internet. Now that internet is becoming easily accessible, many people now choose the internet as their source of entertainment. Now you can sit at home and watch your favorite game, (it could be a game of football for example), on your computer via the internet, or watch your favorite TV shows and movies on Netflix and all this entertainment being made possible by the vehicle we call the internet.

 

  • Storage – We have seen in the recent years, the various trends in the digital world and Cloud computing happens to be another trending topic. Cloud storage is simply a system in Information technology that focuses on storage of information on a remote database and in most cases is accessible via the internet. The internet has opened this storage option which is in most cases very reliable and efficient. ( See more ).

 

  • Education – The internet has also enabled educational institutions to conduct lectures online, and even making it easy for their students to access their study material online. Besides this setup, students also get their study material, or even do their research online, over the internet at the comfort of their home, no more need to visit physical libraries as they can easily access everything they need on the internet. Even google has its engine for scholars and it is a freely accessible web search engine that indexes the full text or metadata of scholarly literature across an array of publishing formats and disciplines. The downside though of internet

  • Fake news – We all love to hear breaking news, but is all the news that’s breaking really reliable? We have recently noticed a surge in the production of fake news, and the internet being the main channel used to spread these false news. It is how ever, up-to the reader to filter the news they get, and get the treasure from the trash.

 

  • Bullying – Cyber bullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. Cyber bullying can occur through Text, and apps, or online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content. Cyber bullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyber bullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior.(This is according to StopBullying.gov )

 

  • Hackers – A hacker is an individual who manipulates and breaks or penetrates into a computer system. These are usually painted as the bad guys, but in actual case, not all hackers are bad. Though the black hat hackers (Those who have intent to cause damage), and these hackers in some cases use the internet to gain remote access into the system. So there is risk of data theft, or being held at ransom by these attackers simply because your computer isn’t fully protected when it connects to the internet.

 

In conclusion

The internet has revolutionized the 21st century and helped people all over the world do things they could have never imagined. So we think that internet was a very good development in the technological world, and such inventions must keep going through the continuous process of upgrades, developing into newer and more sophisticated technologies that could make life easier for everyone in the world.
